Best Stainless-Steel Frying Pans: Three Exact Models to Add

Three exact uncoated stainless-steel pans compared by usable surface, cladding, weight basis, handle, lid, oven limit and ownership friction—not vague non-toxic marketing.

The Add or Pass decision

Start with the Tramontina 80116/007DS when value matters and its smaller flat area is enough. Choose All-Clad D3 41126 when an included lid and classic long-term platform justify the step up. Choose Made In COOK-12-FRY-ISS when its published 9.5-inch flat surface, 3-pound pan and hollow handle are the better fit.

Why this list exists

Buy the pan geometry and workflow—not the fear or the layer count.

Interest in uncoated cookware is real: a nationally representative Consumer Reports survey conducted in April 2025 found that 65% of US adults were at least somewhat concerned about PFOA, PTFE or PFAS in cookware and bakeware. That concern creates a useful buying question, but it does not justify exaggerated health claims.

All three pans here put uncoated stainless steel against food and use aluminum inside the cladding to spread heat. The important differences are the flat area available for food, loaded handling, whether a lid is included, cleaning rules and exact-model identity.

01

How we chose

The evidence each product had to earn.

01

Measure usable surface

A 12-inch label describes nominal diameter, not how many cutlets fit flat. Made In publishes 9.5 inches of cooking surface; Tramontina and All-Clad do not publish a comparable number, so we keep that uncertainty visible.

02

Treat weight honestly

A pan must still be manageable when it holds hot food. We distinguish pan-only weights from a two-piece pan-and-lid product instead of presenting unlike measurements as a ranking.

03

Do not rank by ply count alone

Tri-ply and five-ply identify construction. They do not by themselves establish heat evenness, response, balance or durability; independent cooking tests and the complete geometry provide the useful context.

04

Price the complete workflow

A fitted lid, helper handle, dishwasher rule and warranty can matter longer than the checkout headline. We record what is actually included and do not store a price that can go stale.

Add this if

  • You want a 12-inch nominal fully clad pan without paying for a lid you will not use.
  • A 2.87-pound published weight makes sense for your handling needs.
  • You accept that the sloped sides reduce flat cooking area.

Pass if

  • A helper handle is required; the linked 80116/007DS does not have one.
  • You need a fitted lid included in the box.
  • You need a manufacturer-published flat cooking-surface diameter before buying.
Why it earns this place

Food Network selected the exact 12-inch Tramontina as its value option, while Bon Appétit praised the heating but flagged the smaller effective cooking surface. That is the useful tradeoff: buy it for value, not because a 12-inch label promises the same usable area as every rival.

All-Clad D3 41126 with Lid

Add this if

  • A fitted lid will be used for simmering, steaming or finishing food.
  • You like the classic All-Clad underhand-grip handle.
  • You prefer the 12-inch D3 pan-and-lid platform selected in Bon Appétit's 2026 test.

Pass if

  • The narrow handle shape is uncomfortable for your grip.
  • You want a pan-only published weight or flat-surface diameter before buying.
  • You will not use the lid and the complete package adds no ownership value.
Why it earns this place

Bon Appétit's 2026 testing selected D3 and emphasized even heating and long-term durability. The reason to pay more here is not a generic prestige score—it is the proven platform plus a lid you will actually use.

Made In COOK-12-FRY-ISS

COOK-12-FRY-ISSOpen the sourced model record

A 3-pound, five-ply pan with a published 9.5-inch flat surface and hollow handle. It is the more transparent geometry choice, but a lid costs extra.

Add this if

  • The 9.5-inch published cooking surface fits your normal batch.
  • A 3-pound pan and hollow stay-cool handle improve your handling routine.
  • You do not need a lid, or you have included the separate lid in the decision.

Pass if

  • A helper handle is important when the pan is loaded.
  • You expect a lid at the base purchase.
  • You are choosing it solely because five layers sounds better than three.
Why it earns this place

Made In earns its place by publishing the flat surface and pan-only weight, not by winning a layer-count contest. Food Network selected it; Bon Appétit found it comparable to All-Clad but considered the missing lid a meaningful omission.

PFAS without panic

Choosing uncoated stainless steel is a valid preference. It is not evidence that proper use of every PTFE pan is an emergency.

FDA says authorized polymerized nonstick coatings show negligible PFAS migration to food, while Germany's BfR says adverse effects are not expected with intended use but warns against strongly overheating an empty PTFE pan. Stainless steel removes the coating and its temperature-management rules from this particular decision, but it also requires oil, heat control and more cleanup.
