Breville BES870XL vs BES878BSS: Express or Pro?
Both require hands-on espresso technique. Barista Pro buys faster startup, more grind steps, an LCD and a shorter chassis.
Choose BES870XL when the pressure gauge and established manual workflow are part of the appeal. Choose BES878BSS when three-second heat-up, 30 grind settings and LCD feedback will improve daily use.

Ownership friction
The details that survive checkout.
Pro does not automate technique
Both still require grind adjustment, distribution, tamping and manual milk texture. The Pro accelerates and explains the workflow; it does not turn it into a push-button machine.
Heat-up affects frequency
The three-second ThermoJet claim matters when a slower startup stops you from making espresso. It has less value when the full puck and milk workflow already fits your morning.
More grind steps help dialing
Thirty built-in settings offer finer adjustment than sixteen, but bean freshness and puck preparation still determine whether those extra steps become useful.
The shorter machine is slightly wider
BES878's published chassis is 2.4 inches shorter but about an inch wider. Measure hopper filling and steam-wand movement, not just the resting rectangle.
Recurring care is shared
Water filters, cleaning tablets and descaling supplies are part of both ownership plans. Faster heat does not reduce that maintenance.
Evidence limits
Conflicts and caveats we will not hide.
Retail suffixes remain important
Breville's product page uses the BES878 family key. The linked Amazon offer identifies the full Brushed Stainless Steel US code as BES878BSS1BUS1; other finish suffixes are not substituted.
No universal taste winner is claimed
The published evidence supports workflow and hardware differences. Shot quality still depends on coffee, water and technique, and no exact-model controlled taste test was used here.
