Home-Network UPS Systems: Useful Connectivity or Inflated Runtime?
Three exact Amazon-available UPS systems compared by real load, battery-backed outlets, ONT fit, waveform, runtime, alarms and battery upkeep.

Add APC BE600M1 when the measured network load fits its battery-backed outlets and a compact network-focused solution is enough. Add APC BR1500MS2 when greater load headroom, AVR and a replaceable battery justify a tower. Add CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD when the exact equipment needs its PFC-sinewave class. Pass until the modem, router, ONT, switches and their actual power supplies are all identified and measured.
The buyer question
What size UPS keeps the actual modem, router and fiber ONT online long enough to matter without buying desktop-class capacity that misses the real outage need?
A larger VA number does not guarantee useful network runtime. The decisive work is identifying every device that must stay up, locating the fiber ONT or cable gateway, measuring the load and separating battery-backed outlets from surge-only outlets.
A UPS can keep local networking alive while an ISP neighborhood node, cellular backhaul or home Wi-Fi fails, so it is continuity equipment—not an internet-outage guarantee. Batteries, alarms, replacement and recycling are part of the purchase.
How to decide
The evidence the category has to earn.
Inventory the actual load
List modem or gateway, router, fiber ONT, Ethernet switch, access points and their power bricks. A router alone may not preserve the connection.
Count battery-backed outlets
Plug only the critical network equipment into the outlets marked battery backup; surge-only outlets do not extend runtime.
Right-size around runtime
Use the exact manufacturer's runtime guidance for the measured load, leaving margin instead of assuming a VA rating equals a fixed number of hours.
Check waveform and maintenance
Confirm equipment needs, alarm behavior, user-replaceable battery identity, safe ventilation and the battery recycling path.
The research shortlist
3 candidates, each with a reason to add—or pass.

APC Back-UPS 600
BE600M1The exact compact BE600M1 has seven NEMA outlets and one USB charging port; map which outlets are battery backed before using it for a network stack.
Add this if
- A measured modem/router/ONT load fits with runtime margin.
- Its compact outlet layout and maintenance plan fit.
Pass if
- Every outlet is assumed battery backed.
- The actual load needs more runtime or capacity than verified.

APC Back-UPS Pro 1500
BR1500MS2The exact BR1500MS2 is a 1500 VA / 900 W tower with AVR, ten outlets and a user-replaceable battery.
Add this if
- Measured load and desired runtime justify the tower's size.
- AVR and replaceable-battery upkeep add value.
Pass if
- The smaller network-only load does not need it.
- The tower has no ventilated location or recycling plan.

CyberPower PFC Sinewave
CP1500PFCLCDThe exact CP1500PFCLCD is a 1500 VA / 1000 W PFC-sinewave UPS for loads where its waveform and larger capacity are actually needed.
Add this if
- The measured equipment and waveform requirement justify it.
- The larger tower and battery plan fit.
Pass if
- A generic network load is being used to justify extra capacity.
- Runtime is being inferred without a load calculation.
Ownership friction
The details that survive checkout.
Test with the real stack
Run a controlled outage test after setup and confirm the ONT, modem, router and Wi-Fi reconnect as expected.
Keep battery upkeep visible
Record battery age, replacement model, self-test results and alarm behavior. Lead-acid batteries are consumables, not permanent infrastructure.
Plan what the UPS cannot cover
Keep a communication fallback for ISP, neighborhood-node or extended outages that outlast the battery.
A UPS is not a whole-home power system
Use it indoors in a ventilated dry location, follow the exact manual, do not overload it or connect inappropriate extension paths, and recycle lead-acid batteries through an approved program. Do not assume battery power makes any internet service available.
