Add Rain Bird ARC8 when on-controller controls, sensor support and an indoor/outdoor enclosure fit an eight-zone retrofit. Add Rachio 3 when app-first weather scheduling is the priority and the controller can live indoors. Add Orbit 57985 when dual-band Wi-Fi, local enclosure and program flexibility fit the system. Pass until mixed sprinkler types, leaks and bad zone design are corrected.
The buyer question
Should weather data drive the schedule, should an on-site soil sensor interrupt it, or does the yard first need corrected zones, emitters and run times?
A smart controller cannot make one zone deliver the right amount of water to sun-baked turf, shaded groundcover and drip beds at the same time. Hydrozones and sound hardware still come first.
WaterSense labeling indicates that a controller meets EPA efficiency and performance criteria. It is not an EPA product ranking or a guarantee that a particular yard will save a stated percentage.

The yard changes after installation
Plant maturity, shade, seasons, emitter changes and local watering restrictions require schedule review even when adjustments are automatic.
Flow problems need physical repair
A controller cannot fix a broken head, stuck valve, pinched drip line, pressure mismatch or runoff caused by poor cycle design.
Accounts and networks become dependencies
Document the owner account, transfer process, Wi-Fi band and manual fallback so the irrigation system remains manageable after a phone or homeowner changes.
Controller voltage is low; installation power is not always simple
Turn off the circuit and follow the exact wiring diagram. Pump-start relays, transformers and field wiring should be handled by a qualified installer when their configuration is unclear.
